9/1/2023 0 Comments Serial experiments lain![]() ![]() ![]() Several of Lain’s peers received the same message, but Lain was the only one to approach it coldly, without panic-with almost dissociative precision. Instead, it was a message from a dead classmate who committed suicide just days before their correspondence. Lain’s first encounter with someone online wasn’t a stranger. We never shared photos of ourselves and, as time went on, we would all begin using fake names, something later referred to as a “display name” or an online “handle.” There were many times when I nonchalantly shared my age and name with self-identified adults-adults who I would IM daily and form invisible bonds with. During this time, while internet users were still developing a global language, children and teens were easily exploited by other alienated people who crept to the farthest reaches of the web as a haven. Many teens who reached adolescence in the aughts, like myself, turned to cyberspaces as a mother-hub for communities, niche hobbies, and escapism. ![]() Technology has always had a queer history. The quality of the video is poor-I’m watching Serial Experiments Lain for the first time on a bootleg website on terrible broadband, the only option available in my rural, South Georgia hometown to this day. At home, I sit cross-legged at our family computer, situated so it is facing my dad’s work computer against the opposite wall, leaning in as Lain activates her e-mail for the first time. Today, I’d like to look at one such example, Yasuyuki Ueda’s Serial Experiments Lain, which not only mirrors my experience growing up as a queer kid but as a person who came of age during the digital revolution.Īlone in her room, Lain Iwakura stares at the vacuous blackness of her computer monitor. These shows had a subconscious effect on my queer identity, whether positive or not, and continue to mean a lot to LGBT viewers because of their non-representational forms of storytelling. Sometimes these protagonists hurt themselves. Often, emotions were solely communicated through surreal flourishes of rose petals, darkening, grotesque facial expressions, and acts of affirming violence. Growing up during the advent of streaming, I found myself in these anime I couldn’t understand, in the feelings of these protagonists whose emotions swirled and shifted. These fansub legacies still follow them to this day. Though unintentional, it only serves to heighten the mystique of shows like Neon Genesis Evangelion and Revolutionary Girl Utena. It was a thankless undertaking, but many-like myself-were mystified by the inaccessible nature many of these shows took on. Later, these versions would be uploaded online-given the amount of times these versions would be ripped and pasted from tapes, much of the original fidelity was lost, and fansubbers were often amateur diehards who wanted to share something they were passionate about. While, to a degree, the anime craze had caught on outside of Japan, only a select few shows aired on Western networks and even fewer were available on VHS.Īround the time of the internet’s inception, groups known as fansubbers began making and distributing bootleg tapes with their own translations. Many of these series were inaccessible outside of importing and dedicated fan communities up until the early 2000s. Directors such as Masaaki Yuasa, Kunihiko Ikuhara and Satoshi Kon are well-known for their experimentations with the medium with keen interests in portraying human experience through conceptual means. A friend of mine affectionately refers to this phenomenon as “Jojo Time” in reference to Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, which famously portrayed a final battle that took place over just a few minutes in a 4-part finale.Īs you stray further into the world of anime, you’ll find more short-form, experimental series that are not meant for a wide audience. Even in popular anime, like Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon, time contorts around long power-up sequences and dramatic, fast-talking banter in the heat of battle. Animation, unlike traditional forms of film or TV, allows for complete abstraction. ![]() 9/1/2023 0 Comments Us bank stadium monster jam![]() Please contact us and a dedicated team member will contact you back within 48 hours. While “Creep” began its life as an alternative hit, it’s traveled straight to the mainstream via these shows, cementing its place among a repertoire of tried-and-trued tracks that aspiring performers never get tired of singing - songs like “I Have Nothing” by Whitney Houston, “Imagine” by John Lennon and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” by Aretha Franklin. Even so, it manages to conjure what Wallace Stevens might have called a “planet on the table.” It feels more encyclopedic than many books twice its length, and its dedicated elaboration of a simple conceit is meditative in the truest sense.Īustin Allen’s first poetry collection, Pleasures of the Game (Waywiser Press), won the 2016 Anthony Hecht Poetry Prize. Alphabet eventually ends at “N” (for “nuclear”?), raising the possibility that its splendors have been cut off prematurely. The poet seems to throw up her hands, but her book is still at its midpoint she has plenty more to catalogue and cherish in the face of this menace. A few pages later we’re reminded that “hydrogen bombs exist” shortly after that, we’re reminded (or informed, if we’re not up on these technologies) that “cobalt bombs exist”. But the atmosphere of threat never dissipates. That’s not to say it becomes morose (or schmaltzy) in fact, the outstanding quality of Alphabet is its serenity, its capacity to absorb the fact of nuclear weapons into a vast natural panorama. It’s a ghost.Īlthough the following section begins with the redemptive “love exists, love exists,” the tenor of the book is never quite the same afterward. Given this setup, we might expect the word “Japan” to appear somewhere in the subsequent lines about Hiroshima and Nagasaki. With Judenburg, Johannesburg, Jerusalem’s Jerusalem With water and land masses jolted by tremors Coming as it does in the “J” section, the passage also interrupts what had been a thick cluster of geographical “J” names: In section 10, the rapturous celebration of things that exist-from “June nights” to “the wingbeat variations of hedge sparrows”-takes a crucial turn with the acknowledgment that “atom bombs exist.” For a non-Danish speaker, it’s hard to know how much of the wordplay in English carries over from the original, but I read this passage as a way of starting over at “A.” In a sense, the spectacular destructiveness of the atom bomb created a new reality. Its alphabetic catalogue unfolds as a Genesis-like act of creation and naming:īracken exists and blackberries, blackberries Published in Denmark in 1981 and beautifully translated by Susanna Nied, Alphabet emerged from a late Cold War world that no longer seems as distant as it did a few years ago. Instead it deepened and took on eerie new overtones as the book progressed. Still, for all the originality of the conceit, I expected it to wear on me after a few pages. Its inventive structure, based on the Fibonacci sequence (the number of lines in each section follow the pattern 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, etc.), impressed me as both clever and challenging, and I soon gathered that Christensen was writing a collection of modern litanies, a poetic inventory of the world’s wonders and terrors. What is blind baking?īlind baking basically means baking your pie crust before you are able to fill it. Just make sure if you use beans to have them fully dried before using them. You can always substitute metal or ceramic weights or dried beans in a pinch. Pie weights ensure your crust will cook evenly by preventing air bubbles from puffing up when it’s placed in the oven and it’s nicely levelled up to hold your filling properly. You also need to let it chill in the refrigerator as instructed for at least 4 hours, this will also help it thicken and set. Make sure you cook it for the full 7 to 8 minutes. If after following the directions, you had a runny filling, this could be because the filling may not have cooked long enough to thicken. Vizio's improved the set of options you can change from the TV itself. Unfortunately, there's no app store, and apps aren't installed on the TV they're links to web-based interfaces. Apps like Amazon Prime Video and Netflix are available, and featured links to content are found on the online TV service Pluto TV. SmartCast features a more traditional home screen. The SmartCast app Vizio provides to access content and adjust settings isn't the fastest and most stable, and not everything is available for casting. While the platform is versatile and has considerably grown in support from app makers, Vizio's implementation is far from perfect. Instead, it relies on its ability to receive content cast from your smart device. Vizio TVs run the SmartCast platform, which is very basic, with a very limited selection of apps and no app store. They released a handful of mid-range models in 2022 and have yet to announce new models for release in 2023. Vizio doesn't seem very focused on their TV lineup, as they stopped selling TVs in Canada entirely and have released very few new TV models since 2020. Most of their current lineup was announced and released in the second half of 2021, and they call it their 2022 lineup. Vizio names their TVs a bit differently from other manufacturers. For example, the 2021 TVs use J in the model code, and those from 2020 have H (M65Q7- J01 is a 2021 TV, while the M65Q- H1 is 2020). Often, it's unclear from the model name which year it's from unless specified, but the model codes make it a bit clearer. Moving up, they have the mid-range M Series Quantum, P Series Quantum, and finally, the flagship P Series Quantum X. Their entry-level 4k TV is the V Series, while the D Series has 1080p or 720p options. Vizio's lineup is straightforward, as they have very few models, but they have made some changes that can be a bit confusing. The Vizio SmartCast interface feels laggy and often crashes, and you can't download any extra apps besides the pre-installed ones. Their low-to-mid-range TVs don't get bright enough to make highlights pop. You likely won't get a satisfying HDR experience unless you get the flagship LED TVs.
